Electric Shock Drowning—Knowing the Risks and What to Do

Would you consider stepping into a bathtub with a live hair dryer? Definitely not. But what about jumping into a lake with a boat docked nearby? Most people don’t realize that freshwater lakes can be dangerous locations when it comes to electrocution risk. This summer, it is important to be aware of the risk of Electric Shock Drowning (ESD) so you can protect yourself and your family.

A boat, dock, or bulkhead lighting may contain faulty electrical wiring or equipment that is conductive to water, allowing an electric charge to enter the water and electrocute unexpecting swimmers.

Electric shocks can be deadly, so it is very important to know what to do if you or someone else has suffered one.

Electric Shock Signs to Watch For

It is important for swimmers to exit the water immediately if they experience any of the following signs of ESD. Once out of the water, swimmers should stay upright and seek medical attention immediately. Symptoms of electric shock drowning can include:

  • Tingling
  • Lightheadedness
  • Muscle cramps
  • Numbness
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Headache
  • Trouble hearing and seeing
  • Irregular heartbeat

Steps to Help a Victim of Electric Shock

Follow these steps outlined by the Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) if you witness someone displaying signs of electric shock drowning:

  • Immediately call 911
  • Do NOT enter the water
  • Warn others not to go into the water
  • If possible, disconnect all nearby electrical sources
  • Remove the victim from the water with insulated lifesaving devices or tools made of rubber, wood, or rope—never use anything made of metal!
  • If the victim is not breathing or has no pulse, perform CPR or use an artificial electronic defibrillator (AED)
